The Durango Heraldā€™s Editorial Board endorsed Michaelā€™s reelection campaign, recognizing him as a ā€œworkhorseā€ in the Senate who has delivered for Southwest Colorado.Ā

DENVER ā ā ā€” Today, The Durango Herald Editorial Board endorsed Michaelā€™s reelection campaign. The third publication to endorse Michaelā€™s reelection so far.Ā

The Durango Herald recognized Michaelā€™s work in the Senate to support Southwest Colorado, including his victories on combating drought, his economic policies that help hard-working Coloradans, and his legislative accomplishments that have benefited rural communities.

ā€œOne thing is undeniable about U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet. The guy is a workhorse. An accidental politician, too,ā€ the editorial board wrote in their endorsement of Senator Bennet. ā€œ…heā€™s worked harder than many over 13-plus years with accomplishments that include improving broadband access through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, expanding the child tax credit for a year and securing $4 billion for Colorado River water conservation in the Inflation Reduction Act. Items that hit home in the Southwest.ā€

The Durango Heraldā€™s endorsement marks the third editorial board endorsement that Michael has received so far in this election. Earlier this week, Michael was endorsed by the Editorial Board of Sentinel Colorado, and in September, he was endorsed by El Seminario, a bilingual publication in Colorado.Ā

ā€œMichael and his campaign are excited to receive the Durango Heraldā€™s endorsement,ā€ explains Bennet for Colorado Spokesperson Georgina Beven. ā€œFrom his work to protect public lands, to his accomplishments for Coloradoā€™s working families, Michael has been a champion for the people of Southwest Colorado and looks forward to earning their vote this November.ā€

Our View: Vote for Bennet: Champion for Southwest

One thing is undeniable about U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet. The guy is a workhorse.

An accidental politician, too. Maybe this is why heā€™s worked harder than many over 13-plus years with accomplishments that include improving broadband access through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, expanding the child tax credit for a year and securing $4 billion for Colorado River water conservation in the Inflation Reduction Act. Items that hit home in the Southwest.

Thatā€™s not to mention Bennetā€™s more quiet body of work that doesnā€™t result in oneā€™s name in lights. Serving on committees, helping constituents, negotiating policy and funding, and co-sponsoring ā€“ or putting his touch on ā€“ dozens of bills signed into law. Bennetā€™s holding out hope for his stalled Colorado Outdoor Recreation Economy Act, which would grant protections to roughly 400,000 acres of federal land in Colorado.

And Camp Hale is now a national monument in large part to his unwavering dedication.

Along with U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, Bennet also introduced the Dolores River National Conservation Area and Special Management Area Act in the Senate to protect this glorious stretch.

Whether leading the pack or working behind the scenes, he gets stuff done for Colorado. We are endorsing Bennet for U.S. Senate.

A Marist poll this month has Bennet leading challenger Republican Joe Oā€™Dea by seven points, 48 to 41. Running his campaign as if he were 20 points behind, Bennet is beating the street, reiterating his record, working for constituentsā€™ votes. Again.

Before taking the Senate seat, Bennet was Denver public schools superintendent, an ideal farm-team kind of job. A stellar superintendent must understand the interiors of systems, work well with people and be accountable for measurements of outcomes ā€“ good or bad.

Oā€™Dea heads a successful construction company. If elected, to counter inflation, Oā€™Dea said heā€™d ā€œfree up the natural gas market,ā€ by exporting liquid natural gas to Asia and Europe. Heā€™d also wrangle the exhaustive permit process.

Curiously, Oā€™Dea said he wants federal funding for local police to hire more officers and reduce crime. He certainly has some good ideas.

On green energy, Oā€™Dea prefers a ā€œprudent approachā€ without enough renewables in place yet.

On affordable housing, Oā€™Dea wants ā€œgovernment out of the wayā€ to reduce costs and incentivize builders.

But in talking with him, Oā€™Dea was a different version than the Oā€™Dea on his campaign website. A page on his site, ā€œPro-Life Leaders Endorse Joe Oā€™Dea,ā€ includes a letter of support from high-profile conservatives. ā€œAs Donald Trumpā€™s U.S. Attorney in Colorado said, ā€˜Joeā€™s a rock-solid conservative.ā€™ ā€

In our meeting, Oā€™Dea said heā€™s a ā€œcentrist moderate Republican,ā€ ā€œmore in the middleā€ and ā€œmore libertarian.ā€ Oā€™Deaā€™s self-described political persuasions are worlds away from those of a ā€œrock-solid conservative.ā€ He canā€™t be both. They represent wildly different bases.

Oā€™Dea never met his biological mother. The letter also states, ā€œJoe speaks with courage and conviction on the need to help more mothers make the same courageous decision his own mother did ā€“ to adopt.ā€ Mothers? Why not fathers?

Also in the letter on abortion, ā€œJoe does not support a ban in the case of rape, incest, or the life of the mother or early in the pregnancy. . . Joeā€™s views ā€“ which include strong and much needed restrictions on abortion ā€“ have much in common with us.ā€

This signals more than moderate. Who exactly is Oā€™Dea? Weā€™re not sure where the dial points between moderate and true-blue conservative.

Bennet is easier to know through his legislative work. Easier to trust. Vote ā€œyesā€ for Bennet for U.S. Senate.
